    Regular Meeting of the Board of Trustees
    Muscatine Art Center
    April 21, 2011

    Tom Spread and Jeffrey Stone.

    President, Tom Spread opened the meeting.
    Visitors:
    No visitors present.
    Minutes:
    It was moved by Mark Huddleston, seconded by Caren Luke to approve the minutes of the
    March 17, 2011, regular meeting as distributed. Motion carried.
    Bills:
    It was moved by Mark Huddleston, seconded by Jeffrey Stone to approve payment of monthly bills
    totaling $12,509.71. Motion carried. Tom Spread and Mark Huddleston signed the Schedule of Bills by
    Fund.
    Credit Card Expenses
    - Monthly credit card expenses totaling $872.65 were approved for payment.
    Tom Spread and Mark Huddleston signed the Monthly Log of Credit Card Expenditures.
    COMMITTEE REPORTS:
    Collections:
    Barb Christensen reported.
    1) Gift from Nancy Purington
    – Nancy Purington gifted the “Meditation of the Mississippi:
    Genesis, 2009” painting to the Art Center. Nancy is an Iowa City artist who grew up along the Mississippi
    River and for many years the river has been a theme in her work. She had two major exhibits at the
    Muscatine Art Center; the most recent called “Twelve Views of Water” which was exhibited here in 2009.
    Barb is a longtime friend of Nancy’s and feels this painting will fit nicely in the Mississippi collection.
    2) Wilmer Collection
    of eleven significant works of art is currently on view in the Musser
    Museum Gallery. Dorothy Johnson, Roy J. Carver Professor of Art History at the University of Iowa, will
    present a special lecture and tour of the Wilmer collection on Saturday, April 30, 2011, at 2:00 PM.
    Building & Grounds:
    Barb Christensen reported
    1)
    Waterproofing Wall in Musser Museum Basement
    - Jerry McKenzie of the City’s Public
    Works Department has obtained a proposal for $6,858.00 from BMW Builders to correct this longstanding
    water problem. The cost of this project will come out of the Buildings & Grounds budget. No action
    required.
    2)
    Walkway Lights
    – the lights are working.
    3)
    Elevators
    - The City received a bid from KONE at a cost of over $20,000 per elevator. Barb
    Christensen will continue to monitor the progress of this project and provide updates as this is a safety
    issue to both employees and visitors at the Art Center. The cost of this project will come out of the
    Buildings & Grounds budget. No action required.
    4)
    Muscatine Branching Out and Keep Muscatine Beautiful
    planted 12 shade trees on April
    16, 2011. The remaining trees to be planted when weather permits.
    5) Landscaping Proposal for 1402 Mulberry –
    The City received a bid from BMW Builders for
    $18,228.00 for Phase 2 of the landscape plan. This bid includes landscaping, stone removal, matching
    curbing, remove walls along drive. Following discussion, it was recommended since the funding for this
    project is coming out of the Art Center’s budget, that Barb Christensen request written bids from Kellor &

    Minutes – April 21 Meeting 
    Kellor Landscape and Greenscape Turf & Design, Inc. The Finance Committee will determine whether
    the funding for Phase 2 will come out of the General Donation Trust or the Brad Burns Trust.
    6)
    Flagpole –
    A 25 foot flagpole is on order to replace the existing pole at a cost of $1,745.00
    and $480.00 to install. Hahn Ready Mix donated the concrete.
    7)
    Washer/Dryer
    – The Art Center purchased a used washer/dryer at a cost
    of
    $400.00. This enables the Art Center to wash and dry their linens at a significantly lower cost than
    outsourcing.
    8)
    Brick Walkway
    – BMW Builders will have the walkway repaired before the Ice Cream Social.
    This project is budgeted out of the McWirter-Gilmore Trust.

    1)
    Financials
    – February and March 2011 financials and Trust Fund reports were
    reviewed.
    2)
    HNI Charitable Foundation Grant –
    Barb Christensen reported
    a
    $5,000 grant was received
    from the HNI Charitable Foundation to fund the Civil War catalogue. One thousand copies to be printed
    and will be available for purchase at the event for $5.00 each. Any unused funds from this grant will be
    put toward more catalogs or expenses of the Civil War programming.
    3)
    Community Foundation of Greater Muscatine Grant
    – Barb Christensen reported a
    $400.00 grant was received from the Community Foundation for the Civil War Encampment by the Third
    Iowa Calvary. This event will be held on June 27, 2011 during PatriArt Week from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM
    in the parking lot of the Art Center.

    Barb Christensen reported.
    1)
    Board of Trustee Members –
    Another potential name for the board was submitted. Barb
    Christensen will follow-up and report back at the next meeting. Tom Spread reported he has been
    unsuccessful in connecting with either of the previous suggestions. The new board member will replace
    David Meloy, whose term expires June 30, 2011.

    Pocketful of Posies: A Treasury of Nursery Rhymes
    by Salley Mavor opens Saturday,
    April 23, 2011. A reception, book signing and gallery talk with the artist will be held on Sunday, May 22,
    2011.
    2)
    Sarah Wilmer Collection -
    Dorothy Johnson, Roy J. Carver Professor of Art History,
    University of Iowa will present a special lecture on the Wilmer collection artists on Saturday, April 30,
    2011 at 2:00 PM.
