Regular Meeting of the Board of Trustees, Muscatine Art Center
August 18, 2010
Present:
Jan Henderson, Doug Krieger, Caren Luke, Tom Spread and Jeffrey Stone.
Absent:
Jennifer Conard, Mark Huddleston, David Meloy and Becky Wichers.
Staff:

President, Tom Spread, opened the meeting.
Visitors:
None present.
Minutes:
It was moved by Mark Krieger, seconded by Jeffrey Stone to approve the minutes of
the July 15, 2010 regular meeting as presented. Motion carried.
Bills:
It was moved by Caren Luke, seconded by Doug Krieger to approve for payment monthly
bills totaling $15,626.01. Motion Carried. A new process is in place for bill approval whereby
two Board members are required to sign the Schedule of Bills by Fund -- Tom Spread and
Caren Luke signed.
COMMITTEE REPORTS
Collections:
Jan Henderson reported.
1)
Muscatine County Iowa Special Edition Winchester Rifle,
2001 prototype (only
ten produced) with case and certificate of authenticity, was gifted by David
McGowan. An estimated value of the rifle is $10,000.
Long Range Planning:
No report.
Building & Grounds:
Barb Christensen reported for Mark Huddleston.
1)
Garage at 1402 Mulberry Avenue
. The City Public Works department torn down
the garage and work will begin soon on clearing, in-filling and seeding the lot. The
property will not be usable until next spring.
2)
Security/Fire Alarm System
– Integrated Technology Partners (ITP) is currently
installing the new system. The five cameras installed were going to be connected to
the Art Center’s computer monitors. It was determined this was not an efficient use
of the Art Center computers/monitors and Barb Christensen successfully negotiated
the donation of two stand-alone monitors by ITP. Staff training to be scheduled
following completion of the installation.
3)
United Way Day of Caring
will be held September 15, 2010, and volunteers are
scheduled to clean up the grounds of the Art Center
4)
Front sidewalk
repair will begin soon.

Caren Luke reported.
Monthly Financials
– The July 2010 monthly financial reports were received and reviewed.
Support Foundation
– Tom Spread attended the quarterly meeting of the Foundation. See
Unfinished Business for report on Eckhardt Estate.
Personnel:
Barb Christensen reported.
1)
Deidre Pearson
, part timer who works every other weekend, resigned for family
reasons. Katie Doherty will work additional hours every other Sunday and Barb will
look for a person to fill the every other Saturday part time position.
Program/Publicity
: Barb Christensen reported for David Meloy.
1)
Artist Steve Gerberich
was at the Iowa State Fair on Sunday, August 15, promoting
his show,
Springs Sprockets and Pulleys
, at the Muscatine Art Center. Barb
attended the Fair and said Steve’s special interactive sculpture for this promotion
drew a lot of attention.
2)
Mobilizing Muscatine Excellence
produced a video promoting Muscatine, which
includes a segment on the Art Center.
3)
New Teacher Orientation Luncheon and Tour
was held this year with 50 teachers
and school administrators attending. The Friends of the Muscatine Art Center
sponsored this annual event.
4)
The Friends Festival of Wreaths
will be held on Saturday, November 20, 2010.

: Tom Spread reported.
1)
David Eckhardt Estate
. Attorney Bill Hargrafen continues to work on terminating
the trust. Funds to fulfill the bequest to the Muscatine Art Center and the Muscatine
Humane Society are located in a Certificate of Deposit earning an interest rate of 4
percent. It was determined that the bank will divide the certificate into two
certificates, each certificate will bear the name of the respective beneficiary, the
certificates will each maintain the same interest rate of 4 percent, and the bank will
make these changes without cost or penalty.
2)
2010 – 2011 Committees
: A list of current committee assignments was distributed.
It was moved by Doug Krieger and seconded by Caren Luke to approve the 2010-
2011 Committees. Motion Carried.
New Business
:
1) Barb Christensen received a personal handwritten note from Ford W. Bell on the
bottom of the accreditation letter from the American Association of Museums

congratulating the Muscatine Art Center for 29 years of membership and for
remaining an accredited museum.

There being no further business, it was moved by Jeffrey Stone and seconded by
Caren Luke that the meeting adjourn. Motion carried.
