    Regular Meeting of the Board of Trustees, Muscatine Art Center
    MAY 20, 2010
    Present:
    Jennifer Conard, Jan Henderson, Eric Knoernschild, Caren Luke, David Meloy, Jeffrey Stone, Tom
    Spread and Becky Wichers.
    Absent:
    Mark Huddleston.

    President, Tom Spread, opened the meeting.
    Visitors:
    None
    Minutes:
    It was moved by Jeffrey Stone, seconded by Becky Wichers to approve the minutes of the
    April 15,
    2010
    regular meeting as presented. Motion carried.
    Bills:
    It was moved by Caren Luke, seconded by Jennifer Conard to approve for payment monthly bills totaling
    $2,398.62. Motion carried.
    COMMITTEE REPORTS
    Collections:
    Jan Henderson reported.
    1) Three Large “Non-Antique” Oriental Rugs
    were received from Doug Conklin, a former volunteer at
    the Art Center. One of the rugs has been placed in the reception room. No action required.
    Building & Grounds:
    Jennifer Conard reported in Mark Huddleston’s absence.
    1)
    Brick Replacement along the Musser walk
    . Bids were submitted to replace these bricks with colored,
    stamped concrete. Two bids ere received: BMW Builders ($3,650) and Heuer Construction ($4,495). The
    Committee recommended that the Board approve the bid from
    BMW Builders
    using funds from the McWhirter
    Gilmore Trust.
    2)
    Landscape project for property at 1402 Mulberry Avenue.
    Landscape Architect ($5,000) and BMW
    Builders ($14,306) submitted bids. The Committee recommended that the Board approve the bid from Landscape
    Architect using funds from the Alice Schaeffer Trust
    and approve the bid from BMW Builders using funds from the
    Burns Trust.
    It was moved by Eric Knoernschild and seconded by Becky Wichers that the Board approve the brick
    replacement and landscape bids with each bid paid out of the respective Trusts listed in Items 1 and 2 above.
    Motion carried.
    Barb Christensen also reported that the Art Center did not receive the $10,000 matching funds grant from
    the Iowa Arts Council for the landscaping projects.
    3)
    Security/Fire Alarm System
    – The Committee is still reviewing the three bids for the security system.
    The Committee will meet again and make a recommendation at the June Board meeting.
    Finance & Budget:
    Caren Luke reported.
    Monthly Financials
    – The April 2010 monthly financial reports were received and reviewed.
    Long-Range Planning
    : No report.
    Personnel:
    Barb Christensen reported.

    has submitted her letter of resignation effective June 5, 2010.

    Miles Dietz
    has begun work as a summer intern, stipend paid by the Friends of the Muscatine Art
    Center.

    Rachel Smaltz
    contacted Barb about interest in Museum work. Given the cutback in City funding,
    Rachel will volunteer her time this summer.
    4)
    Art Center Staffing
    : Barb will meet with City Administrator Gregg Mandsager on Tuesday, May 21,
    2010, to discuss staffing plan.
    5)
    Board Vacancies
    : Eric Knoernschild goes off the board at the end of June 2010 and Jan Henderson’s
    term expires in June 2010.
    The following people have expressed an interest in serving on the board: Cheryl Carlson, Doug Krieger
    and Mary Shihadeh. Following discussion, it was determined that Barb would submit the name of Doug Krieger to
    Mayor O’Brien to fill the vacancy.
    Jan Henderson will remain on the board for another term.
    Program & Publicity:
    Barb Christensen reported:
    Ice Cream Social
    is Sunday, June 27, 2010, from 1:00 to 5:00 PM. Entertainment will be provided by the
    Civil Chorale, Wesley Winds, and The Creepin’ Charlies. Children’s games sponsored by the Musser Public
    Library, Freddie the Fire Truck, Moon Jump and Pony rides. Barb will e-mail a sign up sheet to the board
    members. Contributions of cookies, pies and bars will be gratefully accepted.
    EDUCATION COORDINATOR’S REPORT:

    UNFINISHED BUSINESS:
    Tom Spread reported.
    David Eckhardt Estate
    : Attorney Bill Hargrafen has formally petitioned the court to terminate the trust and
    turn the funds over to the beneficiaries -- one-half to the Muscatine Art Center and one-half to the Humane Society.
    Following discussion, it was moved by Eric Knoernschild and seconded by David Meloy that the Art Center bequest
    be deposited into the Support Foundation account. Motion carried.
    NEW BUSINESS:
    Barb Christensen reported.
    AAM Membership and Accreditation
    : The Board discussed the pros and cons of continuing with the
    AAM Membership (Annual Fee $250.00; Annual Dues $271.00) and the Accreditation. Following discussion, it was
    decided that the Art Center will continue with the membership fees, will opt into the cycle extension option through
    2019, and will make a determination in 2019 whether the value added with accreditation going forth is worth the
    time and money to complete the very expensive and complex accreditation process. Based on the requirement of
    the AAM’s Accreditation Commission Policy, a Statement of Support from Parent Organizations (City of Muscatine)
    must be provided, it was also determined that Barb will discuss the accreditation process with City Administrator
    Gregg Mandsager and the importance of the City’s support.

    There being no further business, it was moved by Caren Luke and seconded by Becky Wichers the
    meeting adjourn. Motion carried.
