Re:
Education Coordinator’s Report, April 2010
We have one more week left in the spring semester. All in all, enrollment has been good. Some people have learned about our
classes while here to view Springs, Sprockets and Pulleys and have signed up for classes. Almost all of the students, especially
the pre-schoolers, look forward to going “upstairs” to view the exhibit before and after class.
The format for our Music for Tots program has changed. We have a new instructor, Cynthia Hector. Cynthia is a certified
Kinder Music instructor and has loads of energy and new ideas. Cynthia has requested that we reduce class maximum from 20
to 15 students. We have continued the format of early morning and late morning music classes.
Our last Kids’ Saturday Workshop for the spring semester is scheduled for tomorrow. Vada Baker will be helping students
create a Mini-Pot-Pourri pie as a Mother’s Day gift. Although we ended up canceling the first Saturday class on March 13, the
rest of the classes were held as scheduled and were a lot of fun for the kids. Vada Baker took over most of Julie Lear’s classes
for us for the spring semester.
There are five of Red Barn Studio classes scheduled for this spring. Taught by Vada Baker, these classes offer painting and
craft projects geared for adults and mature teens. So far, Enrollment in Red Barn Studio classes has been very good. We have
one Red Barn class remaining.
Kris Lee offered a Calligraphy Workshop for adults this spring which was well attended and enjoyed by all. She will continue
the adult classes in the fall and will be offering a calligraphy class for kids this summer.
With Julie Lear now at the library full time, the number of outreach programs has been reduced. Vada Baker is taking over the
Y’s Variety Arts program (with Julie co-teaching for the spring semester while she learns the ropes). Vada is also our
instructor for the DCSI senior students. These classes take place once a month. In March Vada offered a workshop on sugar
egg boats for Easter, in April the students decorated wooden birdhouses using one-stroke painting techniques, and in May the
students created artistic Mother’s Day cards.
I do not have a good number for tours due to the fact that I am now working half-time and Katie has taken over the afternoon
tours. What tours I do have numbers for that took place in April are in the attendance report for April.
We have temporarily discontinued the birthday parties since we have no instructor for them. We are, however, renting the
studio for parent-organized birthday parties for those children who want to have their party here and see Springs, Sprockets &
Pulleys.
In addition to the usual support for the spring semester, I have put together a summer program as requested. The brochure will
go to the printer today. We should be able to mail it out the end of next week.
The format for this summer is slightly different from past years: Cynthia Hector will be teaching two Music for Tots sessions
this summer on Friday mornings. Family Days has been discontinued. There will be no Art for Tots classes this summer. Due
to the scheduling of College for Kids there will be no art camps in June. Amy Kling has agreed to teach for us this summer.
She will be offering photography on Wednesday afternoons. Field trips have been discontinued but this class includes four field
trips. Amy will also be teaching painting classes on Tuesday afternoons. Kris Lee will be offering a Calligraphy workshop for
kids on Tuesday mornings. Vada will offer acrylics for kids on Thursday afternoons and Amy Kling will offer a clay class in
this time slot as well. Vada will also continue her Red Barn Studio classes on Thursday evenings.
As this is my last semester, I have also been familiarizing Katie Donner with the supplies and basic education procedures.
Let me know if you have anything else to add to the list.
