Civil War Soldier Stone Monument from Muscatine Court House
Lawn
: Virginia Cooper, on behalf of the Art Center, attended a meeting of the
Civil War Memorial Committee (the “Committee”) on January 10, 2010. The
Committee wants to remove the worn 6 foot-2, 136-year-old Civil War soldier
statue. Virginia told the Committee that the Art Center, in celebration of the 150
th
anniversary of the War, was planning a major Civil War exhibition in 2010, and if
the Committee was thinking of disposing of the piece or placing it in private
hands, the Art Center would like to talk with the interested parties. During the
January 11, 2010 County Board of Supervisors meeting and unbeknownst to the
Art Center, the following motion was approved:
Discussion was held regarding
possible disposition of the Civil War Memorial statue. Shoultz stated that the committee
had met with the Art Center who asked if they could have the soldier on top of the
monument after it is removed. Shoultz stated that the Art Center would keep it displayed
indoors. On a motion by Furlong, second by Kelly, the Board will donate the soldier from
the Civil War Memorial to the Muscatine Art Center after it is removed. Ayes: All.

Re:
Education Coordinator’s Report, January 2010
The winter semester has begun. Although our over-all enrollment is down due to weather-
related cancellations, our enrollment per class is doing well, especially in the Music for Tots
program.
Preschool Art got off to a slow start but enrollment is increasing. The last morning Music for
Tots class is over capacity and includes a number of families new to the program.
Our January Kids’ classes did not do so well. Fun with Clay: Old Man Winter Wall Pocket
with Julie Lear was canceled due to low enrollment, and “Oil Painting for Kids: The Phoenix”
with Vada Baker has been re-scheduled for March due to a family emergency.
There was one Red Barn Studio classes held in January. “Zebras: A Study in Black and
White” was held on Thursday, Jan. 28. The students came back for an additional class on
Sunday, Jan. 31 to finish up their projects.
We conducted two outreach programs in January. On Jan. 11 Julie Lear conducted a
workshop on masking tape masterpieces for the Y Teen Leaders, and on Jan. 21 the Y Teen
Leaders learned the art of bargello weaving. The Art Center is also currently hosting the
Homeschool Assistance Program’s Enrichment Classes. This winter the subject is chemistry.
There were no tours scheduled in January
There was one birthday part held in January.
The spring class program has been completed and I am working on the brochure. I have also
begun planning our summer schedule. In addition to supporting our winter classes, Julie Lear
and I are working on organizing supplies and doing a supply inventory so everyone knows
what is where. We are also getting ready for our part in the Redwall Winterfaire, a
community-wide celebration which will take place this weekend.
Let me know if you have anything else to add to the list.
