September 17, 2009
Present:
Jennifer Conard, Mark Huddleston, Jan Henderson, Eric Knoernschild, Jeffrey Stone
Absent:
Caren Luke, David Meloy, Tom Spread, Becky Wichers
Staff:
Barb Christensen
Visitors:
none
Minutes:
Changes to the last minutes on page 2, Building and Grounds Committee report, 4
th
paragraph. The new paragraph now reads: “A portion of the John W. Conner Glass Collections
is on display in the display case on the main steps.” This paragraph was moved to the
Collection Committee report.
It was moved by Eric Knoernschild and seconded by Jeffrey Stone that the minutes, with
changes, of the August 20, 2009 meeting be approved. Motion carried.
Bills:
It was moved by Eric Knoernschild and seconded by Mark Huddleston to approve the
monthly bills totaling $10,635.80 for payment. Motion carried.
Barb will check on the Yellow Pages advertising contract. (On September 18, Barb reported to
the Board by email: We are obligated contractually till Feb/2010. At that time the advertising will
be dropped.)
COMMITTEE REPORTS
Collections:
Art Center Registrar, Virginia Cooper, has begun installing the exhibition: Recent
Acquisitions to the Permanent Collection in the linkage showcases.
In addition to the pitchers from the John Conner glass collection; there is now a selection of
toothpick holders on view in the Musser showcases.
The Art Center will be loaning the series of prints “Medicine Men” by John Doyle to the Musser
Public Library. The loan will last approximately six months. Following this loan, the Art Center
will be loaning a series of photographs to the library.
Piece of interest to the Art Center for possible acquisition are additions to the Great River
Collection, and secondly pieces by Iowa artists.
Acquisition money is low due to budget cuts. Next Spring there is a promise gift from Dick and
Sandra Toye.
Building and Grounds:
Work is completed on the small gallery in the Musser Museum. The
next show will open there on October 1.
Work is completed in the Reference Library meeting room. A lamp shade was broken by the
installers and will be replaced.
The last public viewing of the Jayne house (1402 Mulberry) was held yesterday (Wednesday,
September 16) from 5-7pm.
The United Way Day of Caring also took place yesterday. 16 volunteers from HNI and
Bridgestone/Bandag cleaned along the fence line.
The Jayne House seems to have some serious prospects. Will probably hold a private showing.
September 25 is the bid day.
Personnel:
Andy is still out. A temporary employee is filling in.
Barb is attending the Iowa Museum Association meeting this fall.
Finance and Budget:
No reports other than the Support Foundation budget.
Reports received from the City are not timely. Without their reports, how can we adequately run
a business? Need monthly and year end reports sent regularly. This needs to be addressed with
the new city administrator, the Mayor and Nancy Lueck.
Long-Range Planning:
Will meet with the committee after September 25 to get some plans
and ideas together for the Jayne lot. Small community theatre was mentioned as a possibility as
part of the new expansion. Some interest by the Pearl City Players in collaborating on the
expansion.
Program/Publicity:
Muscatine Symphony Orchestra will perform September 26. The rental fee
was waived since they are non-profit. They will pay for three Art Center staff members for
cleanup. Will be paid contractually.
The need for a community-wide event calendar. The Chamber of Commerce had discussed this
at one time.
Education:
See submitted report.
Director’s Report:
Attendance is down slightly. Last year Project Insect was a huge draw. We
are constantly booking the garden for weddings.
Mosaic project will happen again this year, but not in association with the school district. Middle
and High School students can get canvases. The mosaics are the property of the Muscatine
Arts Council.
Unfinished Business:
None.
New Business:
None.
Adjourn:
A motion to adjourn was made by Eric Knoernschild and seconded by Mark
Huddleston. Motion carried.

Education
Coordinator’s
Report,
August
2009
The
fall
semester
has
begun.
As
you
can
see
from
the
attendance
report,
class
enrollment
continues
to
be
low
compared
with
the
past
two
years,
reflecting
the
economy.
Our
total
attendance
(including
outreach
programs)
is
high
this
September
because
of
an
unusually
high
attendance
at
the
West
Liberty
Children’s
Days.
Preschool
classes
began
in
September.
Thanks
to
the
Boyer
triplets
Julie
Herold’s
Art
for
Tots
classes
have
met
their
minimums
and
they
are
all
having
a
great
time
creating
innovative
art
projects.
Julie
Lear’s
Music
for
Tots
enrollment
is
up
from
summer
–
near
capacity
in
both
early
morning
and
late
morning
sessions.
Our
kids
Saturday
Workshops
will
begin
in
October.
There
were
no
Red
Barn
Studio
workshops
in
September.
They
are
also
scheduled
to
resume
in
October.
Homeschool
art
classes
have
begun.
This
semester’s
theme
is
“Pop
Art
Picnic,”
in
which
the
students
are
learning
about
various
“pop”
artists
who
painted
images
of
food.
The
format
is:
first
they
paint
it,
then
they
eat
it.
The
first
class
was
about
the
art
of
Wayne
Theibault,
and
the
students
created
colored
pencil
images
of
lollipops
while
learning
about
composition
in
art.
We
conducted
a
number
of
outreach
programs
in
September.
On
Thursday
Sept.
3
Julie
Lear
gave
a
workshop
on
the
art
of
Karl
Zerbe
for
Y
Teen
Leaders.
Based
on
the
painting
“Snake
in
the
Grass,”
the
students
created
a
collage
using
real
snake
skins.
Needless
to
say,
this
is
a
popular
workshop!
On
Monday
Sept.

Julie
showed
members
of

I
am
currently
working
on
