Re:
Education Coordinator’s Report, June 2009
The summer semester has begun. As you can see, enrollment is down from last year.
This is explained by the fact that last year we had a “free” Project InSECT camp which
more than doubled attendance for that week. Our outreach numbers are also lower than
last year, partly because of Project InSECT activities and partly because the Ice Cream
Social attendance (games and crafts) was down from last year, reflecting the economy.
*The low “attendance” number in 2007 is because that year the Ice Cream Social fell in
July. If you add those numbers to the June 2007 total it would be 467 instead of 252.
Our June Family Days theme was “Fiesta” and the kids had a great time creating paper
molas and clay suns. The “Fiesta” class for the older kids was cancelled due to low
enrollment.
There was no Music for Tots in June. We will begin the summer session this month.
We conducted two art camps in June. Our “Art of Mexico” camp was tied in to the
exhibit in the Stanley Galleries. Julie Lear taught the students how to create paper
sculptures of jaguars, felt molas and clay Sun God Sculptures. The second camp was
“The Art of Photography.” Amy Kling began the week with basic information about
taking pictures, took a field trips to Monsanto Butterfly Garden on Tuesday and Jefferson
playground on Wednesday, studied the work of Andy Goldsworthy on Thursday (the kids
created and photographed a sculpture made from materials found in the Japanese Garden,
and ended the week by having the students create photo books using the photographs they
had taken during the week.
There were no Red Barn Studio scheduled for June. They will begin next week.
On Thursday June 9, Julie Lear taught the Y Teen Leaders how to make whirligig lawn
ornaments from recycled materials. She repeated the workshop on Monday, June 15,
Julie Lear for the Y Variety Arts kids On June 12 kids from the Y Kids Club made
Grant Wood paper dolls and watched a movie as part of a tour.
On June 25 members of the Girl Scout service group created decorative t-shirts as part of
their “Wearable Art” badge.
Members of the Senior Program of the Diversity Service Center of Iowa came to the Art
Center for a workshop with Vada Baker in which they created origami “Pocket” books
and bookmarks.

8
There were eight tours in June. On June 2 the Washington ESL students and Scot
Community College International students viewed The Art of Mexico. On June 3
Franklin 4
th
graders viewed the Art of Mexico and the mansion. On June 11 ladies from
the Island Methodist Church took a tour of the mansion and the Art of Mexico and girls
from the soccer tournament took a mansion tour. On June 12 the Y Kids Club toured the
Art of Mexico, the mansion, and had an art activity in the studio. On June 18 kids from
the Salvation Army summer program toured the mansion and the Art of Mexico exhibit
and took part in a Native American peace ceremony in the sculpture court. On June 25
kids from Wilton Child Care took a tour of the mansion and participated in the peace
ceremony in the sculpture court.
There were no birthday parties scheduled in May.
In addition to supporting our summer program I am currently working on the fall
brochure and copy for the next Watermark.
Let me know if you have anything else to add to the list.
