Visitors Speak:
Dan Clark & Mike Maharry.
Dan stated that they were at day 56 of the 180 day “allowance”. He had asked
the Commission if there was a motion to quit pursuing plans to save the Jayne
house. Their Board indicated that they wanted to continue to pursue saving the
house.
Mike mentioned that he had a similar position with a preservation commission in
Iowa City. Mike asked if we could summarize the MAC’s plan for the Jayne lot.
Barb and Scott explained the MAC’s general plan for the property.
Dan mentioned that there is another house mover (Patterson) in Washington,
Iowa whom they have contacted to assess moving the house. They would like
him to look over the house and property and combine his visit with a presentation
on house moving.
Dan & Mike asked for our reaction to moving the house down to the back of the
lot. Mike Huddleston responded by telling them the MAC’s Building and Grounds
Committee will meet to discuss this proposal.
Minutes:
It was moved by Tom Spread and seconded by Mark Huddleston that
the minutes of the March 19, 2009 Board Meeting be approved. Motion carried.

Committee recommended to the full Board that we follow Virginia’s advice and
formally remove these from the Art Center’s collection. There were several
pieces that Virginia proposed we retain because they were related to Muscatine

or the vicinity. It was moved by Mike Knott and seconded by Tom Spread that
the deaccession proceed. Motion carried.
Building & Grounds:
The damaged floor tiles in the entryway were replaced.
The double pane window in the entryway also needs to be replaced. Building
and Grounds is looking into this.. The chimney on the Carriage House was
repaired. A group of volunteers from the Stanley Group are coming on Saturday,

Re:
Education Coordinator’s Report, April 2009
The spring semester is about half over. Excluding “Family Fun Days,” we have already
met our minimum enrollment in all but a few of our classes. We are trying to reschedule
the two programs that were cancelled due to illness for May. However, the trend of
decreasing paid class enrollments and increasing attendance of outreach events continues.
Red Barn Studio is now offered every other week instead of every week, and Pet Rock
Studio has been replaced by a once/semester School’s Out Special. Also, from speaking
to parents, I know that the economy is taking its toll on class enrollments. You will
notice quite an increase in over-all attendance for April. As you will see below, this was
accounted for by the larger-than-usual number of outreach programs scheduled.
What with the increase in preschool programs in the community, our Art for Tots classes
continue to experience low enrollment. We have changed the format to allow for the
presence of siblings and will only be offering one Art for Tots class per week in the fall.
Family Fun Days, requested by parents of multiples, has not proven to be successful and
will be discontinued in the fall semester. Music for Tots enrollment is also down for the
late spring program. I plan to send Julie to the library for Baby Lap Sit at the beginning
of each session of Music for Tots to promote her program and try to increase enrollment.
We held three Saturday Kids’ Workshops in April. Julie Lear helped students create
Victorian-style egg trees on April 11, Vada Baker conducted an oil painting workshop
“Painting Animals” on April 18, and Julie Lear celebrated Earth Day with a recycled
“Ornamental Whirligig” for the garden on April 25. One kids’ workshop, “Cubist
Animals,” was cancelled due to low enrollment.
There were three Red Barn Studio classes scheduled for April. “Mixed Emulsions:
Photographic Imagery” was postponed due to instructor illness and “Artist’s Journal and
Bookmark” was cancelled due to low enrollment. “Rock Sculpture” met its minimum
enrollment. I will work on finding new ways to promote these programs.
Julie Lear taught a workshop on Celtic Illuminations Y Teen Leaders on April 2 and a
workshop on hanging heart frames for the Y Variety Arts Group on April 6. On April 27
the Hodgepodge Kids created Victorian candy boxes and dipped chocolates. On March
16 Julie went to the library for a “Music for Tots” program for Baby Lap Sit. The
Muscatine Community School District’s Homeschool Assistance Program continued their
spring art classes, taught by Julie Lear. This semester’s theme is “The Other Side of
Georgia O’Keeffe,” which features projects which do NOT involve her giant flowers.
HSAP’s “Junkbox Wars” enrichment classes wrapped up in April with a giant marble

slide in the studio. They also held a “Peeps Decorating Contest” in the studio on April 7.
On April 13 and 14 Julie presented “Music for Tots” programs at Happy Time Preschool,
and on April 14 she took her “Music for Tots” program to Baby Lap Sit at the library. On
April 4 we participated in the YPN Easter Program at the Y with a “Twirly Bunny”
activity, and on April 18 we took part in the Y Healthy Kids’ Day with a “Vegetable
Warrior” Indian-style headband.
Members of the Senior Program of the Diversity Service Center of Iowa came to the Art
Center for a “Painted Rock” workshop and a tour of “Las Artes de Mexico.” Generously
funded by a grant from the Community Foundation, students will become familiar with
the Art Center’s collection through a series of tours and create fun art projects taught by
Vada Baker.
There were eight tours scheduled for April. Elementary students from Jefferson and
Colorado came to view their artwork during Project Mosaic and there were two mansion
tours.
There were no birthday parties scheduled in April.
In addition to supporting the spring program I am working on our summer and fall class
schedules. The summer brochure has been printed and is being distributed this week. I
have created a tour curriculum for Las Artes de Mexico for elementary students. The
scavenger hunt activity in the mansion which introduces kids and their parents to the
artifacts on display there continues to be a popular activity both with the kids and the
parents.
Let me know if you have anything else to add to the list.
