Re:
Education Coordinator’s Report, December 2008
December is always a fun month, with our traditional holiday classes Unfortunately
enrollment has dropped again this year in our paid classes. I think this is partly due to the
downturn in the economy and partly due to the fact that each year there are more
children’s programs and activities, many of which are less expensive, for parents to
choose from. Attendance in our outreach events continues to hold steady.
We held two kids’ Saturday workshops in December – our ever-popular “Gingerbread
House Workshop” and “Santorama.” This year the gingerbread house was a one-room
schoolhouse, and the Santa ornament was a “Candybag” Santa inspired by one of the
Victorian ornaments from our permanent collection.
There were
outreach programs in December. On December 3 Julie Lear went to
Happy Time Preschool for a “Music Lady” event which had been cancelled due to bad
weather in November. On December 4 we partnered with Musser Library in our annual
“St. Nicholas Day” story time at the Art Center. This year we changed our theme
somewhat to feature the fairy tale illustration exhibit and coordinate with the Fairy Tale
Extravaganza. However, St. Nick DID appear and put candy in everyone’s shoes! On
Dec. 8 Julie Lear led the Y Variety Arts kids in creating Icosahedron Christmas
ornaments from recycled Christmas cards. She repeated the program on Dec. 11 for the
Y Teen Leaders. On December 11 we hosted a Gingerbread House Workshop for the
Homeschool Assistance Program. We tried
to host an event for Newcomers Club in
December, but had to cancel and reschedule twice because of weather. I hope the third
time is the charm – we are scheduled again for next week!
There were no formal tours scheduled in December.
There was one birthday party held in December.
I am currently working on supplies and support for our winter classes and planning the
spring and summer programs.
Let me know if you have anything else to add to the list.
