COMMITTEE REPORTS
Collections:
Knott reported that a child’s stove was being auctioned by
Jackson’s Auctions in Cedar Falls. The Collection Committee discussed the
stove and recommends purchase to the Board. The pre-auction estimate is
$1,500 but it is considered likely that the sale price will surpass that. Eric
Knoernschild moved that Barb be authorized to call in a bid of $2,700 for the
stove with funds taken for the Support Foundation Acquisition Fund if successful.
The motion was seconded by Mike Knott. Motion carried.
Building & Grounds:
Barb met with Mark Huddleston to discuss the security
system. Additional quotes are being sought.
Additional tuck-pointing is required for the mansion because of leaks near the
roof of the Music Room. The City plans to have a Contractor perform the work
but it will be the MAC’s cost responsibility.
Finance & Budget: “
Special” checks were approved by the Board for payment
to PROJECT InSECT. The project is now fully funded following a contribution of
$8,000 from the Roy J. Carver CharitableTrust.
Long-Range Planning:
The two Long-Range Planning Committees from the
MAC and the library met on March 6
th
and again this date. A Public Presentation
document is being prepared. Approaching a “lead donor” was also discussed.

Personnel:
Barb’s Annual Review will soon be initiated by Mary Wildermuth.
Mary will be contacting Board members.
Tom Spread agreed to serve a 2
nd
term but a replacement for Mary needs to be
found. Mary will soon be completing her 2
nd
term.
Program/Publicity
: A re-work of MAC’s website was discussed with Sedona
Technologies (

ST
was used by the Figge Art Museum in Davenport. They
have an attractive re-work package priced at $6,300 that Barb believes is
adequate. There is $7,439 available in the Support Foundation budget for this
re-work. Mary Wildermuth moved that
ST
be hired to perform the $6,300 re-work
with funds taken from the Support Foundation. The motion was seconded by
Eric Knoernschild. Motion carried.
10,000 copies of a new MAC brochure will be printed by Sycamore Printing for
$700 with funds taken from the General Trust.

Re:
Education Coordinator’s Report, March 2008
Our spring semester has begun, and so far enrollment is good. However, enrollment is
down from 2007 and 2006. The drop in students enrolled is accounted for by several
factors. We did not offer classes the first week in March this year. Also, our afternoon
weekly class, Pet Rock Studio, is no longer being offered, and Vada Baker is only
offering her Red Barn Studio classes ever other week. The huge increase in the
attendance numbers in 2007 is accounted for by the school tours for the Eisele Hill
exhibit and an outreach to Happy Time Preschool in that year.
Our Tots classes began on March. 12. Enrollment is down in Julie Herold’s Art for Tots
classes but is good in Julie Lear’s Music for Tots. Julie Herold’s classes, which require
an adult for each child enrolled, are facing increasing competition with other programs in
the community which do not have the one-on-one requirement. We are currently
exploring possible changes in the Art for Tots format.
There were three Kids’ workshops in March. On March 15, in honor of St. Patrick’s
Day, Julie Lear discussed medieval illuminations as the students created illuminated
versions of their initials on parchment paper. Sat. March 22 was our Easter class. The
students created a Victorian-style papier mache candy box shaped like an egg. Each
child received a chocolate bunny for his egg. Jeanna Gerot taught a printmaking
workshop on March. 29. Students observed water in movement and created monoprints
showing their impressions of what they had learned.
Our “School’s Out Special” was held on March 17. Julie Lear helped the students create
panoramic sugar eggs. This year she added cocoa to the mix and the scenes were made
from Victorian scrap rather than edible candies. Everyone had a wonderful time.
The Red Barn Studio workshop scheduled for March was cancelled due to low
enrollment. These classes did not make the regular brochure since the Art Center’s
evening hours had not been determined. We sent out a flyer as soon as the change in
hours was finalized but did not have good enough response to hold the class. We will try
to promote the remaining three classes. Sometimes it is difficult to re-establish a
program in a different time slot.

On Monday, March 3, Julie Lear taught a workshop about artist Nicki St. Phalle for the Y
Variety Arts kids. They are creating “pop” bathers to display at the Y pool. On March 6
she let a panoramic sugar egg workshop for the Y Teen Leaders.
Spring art classes for the Homeschool Assistance students have begun. This spring the
theme is “Botanicals” and the students are learning how different artists use botanicals in
their art. These classes are taught by Julie Lear. The Art Center is also hosting two
enrichment programs for the Homeschool Assistance students. Susan Fridrych is
conducting a geology workshop for grades 4 – 12, and Jane Hodge is teaching a botany
workshop for K-3.
There were no tours scheduled in March.
There were no birthday parties scheduled in March.
In addition to supporting our spring program I am working on our summer program and
brochure, including a special Project InSECT summer art camp.
Let me know if you have anything else to add to the list.
