The MAC would like to adjust Thursday night hours to allow
Staff to work straight through to a 7:00 PM closing in lieu of closing between 5:00

be changed to 5:30 PM. There was general agreement among the Trustees

Re:
Education Coordinator’s Report, December 2008
The fall semester has ended. As you will note on the attendance report summary, this
year enrollment in our regularly scheduled classes was down somewhat compared with
the past two years. This drop in numbers was accounted for by the discontinuation of our
“Pet Rock Studio” after-school program and a reduction in attendance in Julie Herold’s
“Art for Tots” program. “Art for Tots” is facing stiff competition from her nature classes
at the Discovery Center, which have been offered at a much reduced fee. “Pet Rock” was
discontinued because Duffy De France no longer wanted to teach the class and we have
not yet been able to find a replacement for that time slot. We have substituted our
“School’s Out Specials” but there are only a few of these each semester and we have not
yet developed a following for this program.
I hope to reinstate our Wednesday after-school program as soon as a good instructor
becomes available. Vada Baker has also temporarily cut back on the number of “Red
Barn Studio” adult workshops she is offering on Thursday evenings. She plans to
increase her workshops again in the Spring semester. Although the number of students
participating in our paid classes has decreased, our outreach numbers have continued to
increase over the past three years.
There were two Saturday Kids’ Workshops in December, both taught by Julie Lear. On
December 1 she taught our annual “Gingerbread House Workshop.” This year we tried a
different pattern for the house and it was quite an adventure. On Dec. 8 we wrapped up
our Kids’ workshops with “Santorama: Hot Air Santa” in which the kids created
Victorian-style Christmas ornaments featuring Santa in a hot air balloon.
There was no “School’s Out Special” in December.
There was one Red Barn Studio, “One-stroke Glass Blocks,” taught by Vada Baker. This
Thursday evening workshop was designed for adults.
Julie Lear taught outreach programs for the Y Teen Leaders and Variety Arts group
(Recycled Christmas Card Ornaments), and High School kids (Gingerbread Houses), as
well as one for the Hodgepodge Kids from Big Brothers, Big Sisters (Japanese Lanterns).
She and I also hosted our annual St. Nicholas Day Workshop for Betty Collins’ Library
Story Time at the Art Center.

The advanced art classes from Columbus High School came for a field trip on Dec. 5 to
view the African-American illustrators exhibit. They had been given one of the
illustrators in the exhibit to research and gave reports on their “artists.” On Dec. 13,
Julie Lear conducted a mansion tour for Catholic Daughters. I presented a program on
Cultural Diversity in museums for Leadership Muscatine on December 12
th
. Julie and I
also organized and set up an exhibit of artwork by our students at the Musser Library,
which will be on display through the end of January.
There was one birthday party scheduled in December.
Our winter program begins on January 16
th
. In addition to facilitating our winter classes,
outreach programs and tours, I am currently working on plans for our spring and summer
2008 semesters.
Let me know if you have anything else to add to the list.
