Re:
Education Coordinator’s Report, August 2007
Our summer semester has ended. As you can see from the attached Attendance Report,
our class enrollment was down somewhat compared to the past two years. I understand
from talking to others who offer programs in the arts that this has been the case with
many such programs this year. Our outreach numbers, however, continue to increase.
The theme of our August “Family Days” was “Clayworks.” The little ones met in the
studio with Julie Lear and enjoyed a half-hour of music and art projects exploring
different kinds of clay, including mixing blue and yellow clay to create green clay and
creating a sand castle “clay” collage using sand clay. The older students met in the
pottery studio with Vada Baker, where they created good luck charms out of Model
Magic clay and embellishments.
There was only one Kids’ workshop in August. Duffy De France showed the students
examples of American abstract artist Brice Marden and then led a spirited workshop in
which they painted with sticks, long-handled brushes and other implements to create
abstract paintings.
Vada Baker carried the abstract theme over into her final “Summer Studio” acrylic
painting classes with a workshop on imaginative abstract design. We had a much better
response to this Thursday time slot than we did with our experiment with Saturday
classes last summer.
As I mentioned in July, our “Behind the Scenes” field trips did not do well this year, and
our August field trip to Miller’s Florist also had to be cancelled. We will re-think the
format for next summer, although I still feel that sketching field trips should be a part of a
well-balanced summer program.
Vada Baker concluded her “Red Barn Studio” classes for adults with “Piano Hinge
Book” on August 2 and “Cigar Box Clutch” on August 9.
We took part in three outreach programs in August. In addition to our regularly scheduled
Y Variety Arts (Masking Tape Masterpieces) and Y Teen Leaders (also Masking Tape
Masterpieces), Julie offered a workshop on Louis Picek’s bottle-cap fish for the
Hodgepodge group.

We conducted four tours in August. On August 7
th
I gave a combination tour to Jeanne
Garvin’s Reunion group. On August 16th we hosted an orientation event for the new
Muscatine Community School district teachers which included brief tours of the mansion
and the history exhibit. On August 20
th
the 4
th
grade teachers held their district meeting
at the Art Center and were given a more detailed tour of the history exhibit. They were
encouraged to bring their classes to view the history exhibit while it is still on display.
On August 27
th
Jefferson 4
th
graders came for a tour of the history exhibit.
There were no birthday parties scheduled in August.
Our fall brochure has been mailed. We will distribute through the schools and to the
preschools the week after Labor Day. It remains to be seen how the absence of the Echo
publication will impact our enrollment this fall. I am currently working on promotion
and supplies for our fall classes and plans for winter and spring 2008 semesters.
Let me know if you have anything else to add to the list.
