APRIL 18, 2007
The Muscatine Historic Preservation Commission met in regular session on
Wednesday, April 18, 2007 at 5:15 p.m. at Muscatine Books and More. Members present
included Devin Pettit, Maryrose Peterschmidt, Diane Day, Jo Ann Carlson, Jim Nepple
and Jerry Lange. Others attending included Sharon and Tom Savage
Following a review of the agenda and minutes, Day moved to approve the consent
agenda; Peterschmidt seconded; motion passed, all ayes.
The West Hill Historic District nomination was discussed. The reports for the 10
additional houses that were not part of the original survey but will be included in the
historic district are still being developed.
Peterschmidt was asked to send a reminder letter about the West Hill nomination
fundraising to West Hill residents.
It was announced that the Friends of HPC bylaws would be signed the next day at
the annual meeting of the Community Foundation of Greater Muscatine. Details will be
hammered out for the Friends group at the annual meeting.
A membership drive for the Friends group would be held next month.
Tom and Sharon reported on the book project for downtown. Tom Savage is
doing the research while Sharon is writing the story.
There was discussion on details of the book. Nepple said the contract with the
Savages would go through the Friends group. Sharon Savage would be marketing the
book through her column in the Muscatine Journal.
Day reported the Historic Preservation Month activities would be held May 5 at
the Welch Apartments Community Room. Clark would arrange to have Mrs. Shirley
Calvert present and other details.
Peterschmidt reported she had met with Rich Klimes on the American Spirit
Plaza. A rotary plaque will be installed on the pedestal. The loose rocks around the
pedestal might be cemented in and a bench also installed if funds are available. It was
suggested a re-dedication of the plaza might be held around September 11.
Pettit reported he is scheduled to talk to the Rotary on June 11. He might use the
PowerPoint presentation and will also distribute membership forms for the Friends group.
New members will also need to be on the next agenda. Possible new members
include Mary Ann Kessler, Jane Reischauer and Terry Eagle.

Pettit also suggested continuing doing Iowa State Inventory survey reports,
especially of Mulberry Avenue and the remainder of the original town.
The next meeting of the commission is scheduled for May 16.
Respectfully submitted,
