Re:
Education Coordinator’s Report, January 2006
Our winter classes are underway, with mixed results. As usual, we are having a good response to the Tots
music and art classes, although enrollment is down slightly from last fall. A number of the parents are
reluctant to bring their children out in the cold winter weather. Unfortunately we did not reach our
minimum for our Wednesday After-School classes, so we have cancelled “Pet Rock Studio” and “Kids
With Class” for the winter semester.
The reason for our lower outreach numbers in 2007 compared to 2006 is a reduction in the number of
students in this year’s winter enrichment program.
Our first Saturday afternoon kids’ workshop, “Art du Jar” with Duffy De France, also did not meet its
minimum and was cancelled. One problem here is that I was in Florida on vacation, so a flyer was not sent
out to remind people of this class. We did have a good response to “Oil Painting for Kids: Wild Animals”
with Vada Baker and “Pottery from the Past” with Julie Lear.
Vada’s Thursday evening adult class, “Red Barn Studio,” is also doing well. On January 18 she taught a
workshop on altered books, and on January 25 she explained the art of photo painting and the students got
to try their hand at this technique.
Our first Sunday “Cabin Fever” program was about my father, Karl Zerbe. In 1965, after a trip to Brazil,
he created a number of leaf collages representing the rain forest. Everyone enjoyed learning about his
artwork and creating their own leaf collage.
We have been hosting a Homeschool Enrichment Program this winter. Susan Fridrych is conducting a unit
about Iowa for her Homeschool Assistance students, and they are all having a great time with their projects.
In February we will be giving them a tour of the Eisele Hill exhibit as part of this unit.
Julie Lear conducted three outreach workshops in January.
The Y Variety Arts Group and the Y Teen Leaders created picture frames in the Iris-Fold technique.
The Hodge Podge Kids from the Big Brothers, Big Sisters program also learned about the art of “Iris-
Folding” and created a heart-shaped “valentine.”
Other than my mansion tour for the trustees, there were no scheduled tours in January. With the help of
Friends Board Member Carolyn Airola and Iowa State Archaeologist Lynn Alex I put together a teachers
packet with information about our Eisele Hill Archaeological Exhibit for 4
th
grade teachers. Carolyn made
a brief presentation at their grade-level meeting and will get the packets to them shortly.
There were no birthday parties in January.
The Spring Brochure has been completed and is at the printers. We will get our student mailing out next
week, and deliver to the schools and preschools shortly after that.
In addition to supporting our winter program, I am now working on plans for our spring and summer 2007
semesters, as well as the Ice Cream Social and other outreach events.

Let me know if you have anything else to add to the list.
