Re:
Education Coordinator’s Report, December 2006
December marked the end of our Fall Semester, and it was a great one! We had terrific response to our
classes and posted significant increases in both class attendance and outreach programs over 2005. (The
reason the 2004 total enrollment figure is higher than this year’s is that the Homeschool Assistance
program has lost participants during the past few years, so there were not as many students participating in
our art classes for that group. We also conducted an Audubon Ark outreach program in 2004 which
included all 4
th
graders in the public school system.) All in all, I was very pleased with the response to our
program this fall.
Our December kids’ workshops kicked off with our annual “Family Gingerbread House Workshop” with
June Pries and Julie Lear. This year we had 24 families creating houses in the studio, with an additional 12
families for whom we baked houses to be finished at home. Julie Lear wrapped up our fall kids’
workshops with “Santorama IX: Clothespin Ornaments & Chocolate Santa’s.” The students had a great
time creating Victorian Santa ornaments and casting chocolate in Victorian replica molds.
Our Home School Assistance students returned to the Art Center in December for a Gingerbread House
workshop of their own.
Julie Lear conducted a number of outreach workshops in December.
The Y Variety Arts Group created “Pop Can Santa’s.” and the Y Teen Leaders assembled, frosted and
decorated gingerbread houses.
The Big Brothers & Big Sisters “Matches” created gingerbread houses, and the HodgePodge group made
Santa ornaments.
Central Middle School’s “School Within a School” program for at-risk students learned how to create
geometric Christmas ornaments from recycled Christmas cards.
The Musser Library evening story time was held at the Art Center on Dec. 14. Betty Collins and I read
stories and Julie Lear showed the children how to create traditional Victorian “scrap” ornaments. St.
Nicholas snuck in and filled the children’s shoes with candy while they were busy in the studio! We
debuted our new hand organ at this event and it was a big hit!
We conducted one tour in December. Third graders from Jefferson School came to view the Christmas
decorations in the mansion.
There were two birthday parties in December. Julie Lear is now serving as “back up” when Betty Smith is
out of town.
The Winter Semester brochure has been completed and distributed.
In addition to supporting our winter program, I am now working on plans for our spring and summer 2007
semesters, as well as the Ice Cream Social and other outreach events.
Let me know if you have anything else to add to the list.
